do you ever just wear headphones so people won’t talk to you

“Why did you choose UC Riverside?” isn’t a question I get asked often enough, and when I am asked, I don’t say nearly enough. I was a high school senior in northern California three years ago, and at my high school, it’s a huge trend to move far away from home. A lot of my friends were getting into schools like Cal Poly SLO, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, MIT, Johns Hopkins … I think you get the picture.
But before we get to the part where I actually decided where to go to college, let’s talk about my college selection process. I didn’t apply out of state. I didn’t want to put my parents under the financial burden of paying out-of-state tuition, especially since I was a pretty average student and not exactly the most active. All of the schools I applied to were in California, and the majority of them were UCs. I knew my chances weren’t bleak, but I also knew they weren’t amazing.
